The Peak of Fire

The trek to Mount Semeru usually takes 2 to 3 days, starting from Ranu Pani village. The trail passes through a variety of landscapes, from lush forests and open savannahs to rocky volcanic slopes.
One of the highlights is Ranu Kumbolo, a serene crater lake located at 2,400 meters. Many trekkers camp here to enjoy the stunning sunrise and the reflection of the surrounding hills on the water’s surface. The trek then continues through Oro-Oro Ombo, an expansive grassland often covered in purple verbena flowers, adding to the scenic beauty.
As trekkers ascend toward Kalimati Base Camp (2,700m), the environment becomes more barren, and the air gets thinner. The final push to the summit, starting around midnight, is the most difficult section. The loose volcanic sand makes it a “two steps forward, one step back” climb. However, reaching the summit at sunrise rewards hikers with an unforgettable view of Java’s landscape and the sight of Semeru’s crater erupting in the distance.

High endurance and strong leg muscles are required due to the steep inclines and high altitude.
Gear and Supplies
Thermal layers, waterproof jacket, gloves, and a face mask (to protect against volcanic ash). Trekking boots with ankle support and good grip. Headlamp, trekking poles, power bank, high-energy snacks, and plenty of water.
