A True Test of Endurance

Mount Raung, towering at 3,344 meters, is one of Java’s most extreme and challenging volcanoes. Unlike the rolling savannas of Merbabu or the scenic crater lakes of Ijen, Raung is known for its rugged, barren landscapes and massive open crater. It has the largest caldera in Java, spanning over 2 kilometers wide, and features a constantly active crater with steaming vents and lava activity.

This volcano is not for beginners—it is considered one of the toughest treks in Indonesia, with steep ascents, rocky ridges, and knife-edge crater trails. Unlike other mountains where hikers reach the peak and rest, Raung’s true summit (Puncak Sejati) requires technical rock climbing with ropes and harnesses.

This activity is mandatory to trek with an accredited guide

Experience

The Trekking Route (Kalibaru Route – Most Common)

Duration:2-3 days trek (one of the longest in Java).

Dense tropical forests at the base with steep, muddy trailsRocky and exposed ridges as you gain elevation. Final summit push requires technical rope climbing, making it a true mountaineering experienceJaw-dropping views of the massive crater—a vast, steaming pit with constant volcanic activity.

At the summit, hikers can see:

One of Java’s most dramatic crater landscapes, unlike any other mountain.

Active lava vents and sulfuric smoke rising from the caldera.

Raung is often described as a thrilling adventure for serious climbers, with its unforgiving terrain and stunning, otherworldly beauty.
