A Journey to the Clouds
Mount Merbabu, standing at 3,145 meters, is one of Central Java’s most scenic and beginner-friendly volcanoes. Unlike its more active and rugged neighbor, Mount Merapi, Merbabu is known for lush green savannas, rolling hills, and panoramic sunrise views over multiple volcanoes.
The name “Merbabu” translates to “Mountain of Ash”, but its gentle slopes and stunning landscapes make it a favorite for both beginner and experienced hikers. The mountain has several trekking routes, but the Selo route is the most popular due to its scenic beauty and relatively gradual ascent.
Permit required, Guide recommended

Mount Merbabu is often described as one of the most beautiful treks in Indonesia, thanks to its open grasslands, colorful wildflowers, and breathtaking sunrise views.
Popular Route: Selo Trail (Most Scenic & Common Route)
Duration: 6-8 hours to summit, 4-5 hours descent.
At the summit, hikers can enjoy:
A 360° panoramic view of Java’s major volcanoes, including Merapi, Sindoro, Sumbing, Lawu, and Slamet.
Golden sunrise views with clouds covering the valleys below.
A peaceful, less crowded experience compared to Mount Merapi.
Mount Merbabu is less volcanic than other peaks, meaning no sulfur fumes or crater activity, making it more enjoyable for hikers who prefer pure scenic beauty over rugged volcanic landscapes.

Best Time to Visit
April to September (Dry season) – Best visibility, warm weather, and clear trails.
Avoid October to March – Rainy season brings muddy, slippery paths and dense fog.
Physical Preparation
Some steep sections and lower oxygen levels near the summit can make the final climb more challenging.
Gear and Supplies
Warm layers, as summit temperatures can be close to freezing.
Proper trekking shoes for uneven, rocky sections.
3L of water, snacks, headlamp for night trekking.
Most trekkers camp overnight at higher elevations to catch the sunrise.
