The Crown of Sumatra

The trek up Mount Kerinci is an intense and rewarding experience. The journey typically takes 2 to 3 days, with hikers starting from the small village of Kersik Tuo. The trail winds through dense tropical rainforests, where hikers may spot wildlife such as gibbons, hornbills, and deer.
As trekkers ascend, the vegetation changes from lush jungle to alpine shrubs and finally to a barren volcanic landscape near the summit. The final stretch to the crater rim is steep and challenging, requiring determination and physical endurance.
Reaching the summit at sunrise is the highlight of the trek, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, forests, and, on clear days, even the Indian Ocean. The crater itself emits sulfuric smoke, a reminder of the volcano’s active nature. Despite the tough climb, many trekkers describe the experience as one of the most rewarding hikes in Indonesia.
