Enchanting Blue Flames of East Java
Mount Ijen, located in East Java, is famous for its otherworldly blue fire phenomenon, acidic turquoise crater lake, and sulfur mining activity. Standing at 2,799 meters, it is one of the most unique volcanic hikes in the world.
The blue flames, caused by ignited sulfuric gas, are one of only two places in the world where this occurs naturally (the other being in Iceland). The sight of miners carrying heavy sulfur blocks on their backs adds to the raw, rugged atmosphere of this trek.
